The white wedding veil is a classic staple of weddings as well recognized as the flowing train of the bridal gown. This familiar accessory underwent significant changes over the years to become the beloved piece of bridal attire it is today.
Symbolism
The bridal veil is a symbol of virginity and innocence. Lifting the veil at the ceremony signifies the groom’s acceptance of the bride’s purity.
History
Bridal headpieces did not resemble modern veils until the 1960s. Before that time, veils of lace or silk tulle hung loosely in front of the bride’s face.
Former Uses
Japanese brides wear a tsuno kakushi headdress instead of a veil to hide “horns of jealousy, ego and selfishness.”
Famous Ties
Princess Diana wore a 25-foot veil when she married Prince Charles. Star Jones’ 2004 wedding featured a veil two feet longer.
Fun Fact
Jacob married Leah by mistake in the Book of Genesis because she wore her sister Rachel’s veil. In the end, Jacob married both women.
